National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed October, Disability Employment Awareness Month in South Dakota.
 
Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) aims to raise awareness about disability employment issues and to celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities.
The 2017 theme for DEAM is "Inclusion Drives Innovation".
 
A host of South Dakota agencies and organizations will engage in activities in October to promote awareness of these issues and to help foster a disability-friendly culture in the workplace.

Here are the following events during DEAM in South Dakota:

Pierre

Tuesday - October 3rd

The Pierre NDEAM event is open to the public. There is no cost to attend, and no pre-registration is required. Dr. Thom Flamboe will present on "Generations in the Workplace - Managing Diversity." His presentation will be followed by an appreciation award being presented to a local employer who has done an outstanding job employing and supporting individuals with disabilities. It will be held at the Ramkota Convention Center (Amphitheater II). It is scheduled to run from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon.

Sisseton

Tuesday - October 10th - 6:00 pm

The Sisseton NDEAM event is open to the public. A free dinner will be followed by a presentation by Chris Koch entitled "If I Can..." Chris' presentation will be followed by some activities recognizing employers and employees involved in Project Skills. Attendees must RSVP by October 1st.

They can do so by calling Rachael Johnson at 698-7445 or emailing Rachael at striping@venturecomm.net. The event will be held at the Family Life Center (404 West Hickory/Hwy 10). Doors open at 5:45 pm, Dinner at 6:00 pm and Chris' presentation at 6:30 pm.

Yankton

Tuesday - October 10th - 11:00 am to 1 pm

The Yankton NDEAM event is open to the public. To register and for more information, visit:  sesd.shrm.org Lunch will be provided at a cost of $25 for Non SESD SHRM Members. A panel of resource agencies will be followed by a panel of area businesses and employees - discussing their experiences, best practices and more with hiring people with disabilities. It will be held at Minerva's Grill and Bar.

Rapid City

Wednesday - October 11th

The Rapid City NDEAM is open to the public and will be held at the Air and Space Museum near Ellsworth Air Force Base. To inquire about the event or to register for a booth, please contact Tom Goergen at Thomas.Goergen@deca.mil.

Brookings

Wednesday - October 11th

The Brookings NDEAM event is open to the public. To register and for more information, visit brookingschamber.org or call 692-6125. Lunch will be provided at a cost of $20 if you register and RSVP by October 6th. If you register after that date, the cost will be $30. "If I Can..." The Chris Koch Story" will be the main presentation. It will be held at the Brookings Swiftel Center. Doors will open at 11:30 with time from networking from 11:30 to 12:00 noon. Lunch and presentation will run from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm.

Sioux Falls

Thursday - October 12th

The Sioux Falls NDEAM event is open to the public. To register on line, go to www.sfbrn.org and click on "NDEAM Event" or register by calling Melanie at 605 367-5260 or by emailing her at Melanie.dumdei@state.sd.us. Breakfast will be provided at a cost of $25 which include admission, presentation and HRCI/SHRM credits. Breakfast will be followed by "If I Can..." presentation by Chris Koch. It will be held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. Breakfast will be from 7:30 am to 8:00 am followed by Chris' presentation from 8:00 am to 9:30 am.

Madison

Friday - October 13th

The Madison NDEAM event is open to the public. There is no need to register and no cost to attend. "If I Can..." The Chris Koch Story" will be the presentation. It will be held at the Madison High School Gym. It will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 9:45 am.

Watertown

Tuesday - October 17th

The Watertown NDEAM event is open to the public, and there is no cost to attend. There will be an awards recognition, complimentary luncheon and presentation. It begins at 11:30 am. Please RSVP by October 11th by emailing Jessica.fischer@state.sd.us or calling (605) 882-5150. It will be held at Lake Area Technical Institute.

Mitchell

Tuesday - October 17th

The Mitchell NDEAM event is open to the public. To register, please contact Jessica at 605-995-8072 or Darla at 605-996-9891. A free lunch will be provided followed by a presentation by Vicki Kerkliet, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Business Resource Network and Kim Hoberg, Business Specialist for the SD Department of Human Services. It will be held at County Fair Banquet Hall. It will begin at 11:00 am and conclude by 1:00 pm.

Mobridge

NDEAM event in conjunction with the "October Business After Hours" Social and Meeting

It will be held at the Grand Oasis. Tuesday - October 17th - 5:30 pm (social) - 6:00 pm (meeting)

Aberdeen

Wednesday - October 18th

The Aberdeen NDEAM event is open to the public and free. No registration is required. "Life Animated" - His Imagination Unlocked An Amazing New World is a film that will be shown, followed by a discussion by local family members and mental health, school and other professionals on the paradigm shift in the field of autism. There will also be recognition of a local employer who has been one of the top employers hiring individuals with disabilities in the Aberdeen area over the past year. The event will be held at the Capitol Cinema (415 S Main Street) from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Rapid City

Thursday - October 26th

The Rapid City NDEAM event is open to the public. To register contact the Rapid City Chamber by calling 605-343-1744 or going to http://web.rapidcitychamber.com. Please RSVP by October 19th by going to rsvp@rapidcitychamber.com or calling 605-343-1744.  The event begins at 7:45 with breakfast and networking, followed with a presentation by Shawn Lyons, Executive Director, South Dakota Retailers Association. It will be held at the Civic Center Holiday Inn. Doors will open at 7:00 am.

Vermillion

Thursday - October 26th

The Vermillion NDEAM event is open to the public. A free lunch will be provided to attendees. To reserve a seat, please RSVP to Michelle at SESDAC by calling 605-624-4419 Ext. 0 or emailing michelle.johnson@sesdac.org by October 16th. Jennifer Erickson of Camille's Sidewalk Cafe in Sioux Falls will be the luncheon speaker. This event will run from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm. It will be held at the Muenster University Center Ballroom on the USD Campus.
