Webinar Will Guide Employers through Steps to Hire People with Disabilities

PIERRE, S.D. – The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR), Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) and South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA) are providing a webinar Tuesday, July 19 at 10 a.m. (CDT).

The program will provide basic information on how employers can begin hiring people with disabilities, including what they can and can’t ask prospective employees and what they need to know about providing accommodations. Participants   will also learn about free resources to help employers with job training, job coaching and evaluating whether their facility is accessible to employees with disabilities.

“Businesses often tell us they would like to hire people with disabilities, but they’re just not sure how to go about it,” said SDRA executive director Shawn Lyons. “This program will explain the first steps employers should take. It will also show them how their business can benefit from having a more diverse workforce.”

The webinar will feature presentations by state Labor and Regulation Secretary Marcia Hultman and DRS business specialist Kimberly Hoberg.

“I am proud South Dakota is already leading the nation in hiring individuals with disabilities. However, there is still room for improvement,” said Secretary Hultman. “The Department of Labor and Regulation can help employers navigate the many resources available to help assure the best fit for individuals and businesses alike.”

Many programs and tools are available to help South Dakota businesses recruit, hire, train and retain workers who have disabilities.

“Oftentimes, businesses are not aware there are already supports available from state vocational rehabilitation agencies, Department of Labor and Regulation, community support providers, etc. in the state when it comes to hiring and retaining South Dakotans with disabilities,” said Hoberg. “Through the opportunity of the webinar, it is our hope to provide businesses with the resources when taking the first steps of hiring or retaining employees with disabilities.”
